Isn't She Lovely...

Isn't she hea~ven~ly?? (yea, I'm singing...)

I'm talking about this "Garden View" quilt by Better Homes & Gardens...

DSC_0019 (2)

photo above courtesy of BH&G

Well let me tell you, I just had to have it!

I love the floral on one side and the stripes on the other. Especially the muted shade of teal and fresh ivory...I just love it! {sigh}

I only needed way less than a twin size, but I had to buy a KING size because that's all they had left. So I brought it home...

DSC_0014 (2)

grabbed my pinking shears and CUT IT UP!

DSC_0013 (2)

Yes, that right...I cut it up.  :)

(after the first snip, it wasn't bad)

Now, I know you are thinking...

"Who in their right mind would spend almost $80 on a brand new beautiful quilt and cut it up?"

The answer to that is ME, ME, ME! I would. And, I did!

And now, I bet you're thinking...

"WHY would you do such a thing Jodie?"

Okay then, let me explain...

I'm working on my swap for Petticoats & Parasols in Savannah and in my mind...it has to be PERFECT! I have to make 24 goodies and I only have less than a month to complete them all!!!

I needed some fabric. Some pretty fabric. Preferably some quilted fabric (because I don't know how to do all that fancy quilt stuff).

I drove an hour to my favorite fabric stores, looked everywhere and found nothing that suited my taste. And I wasn't going to pay $15 a yard for a half quilted side with an ugly, plain pattern on it. I just wasn't going to do it!

I came home depressed and defeated. I mean like, don't you just get so frustrated when you have an idea in your mind...one that you can just see it, almost touch it...but can't make it happen? Well, that was me...until the REAL creative side of my brain started working. That usually happens when I start talking to myself out loud :)  I tend to carry a conversation with the other half of my brain...only sometimes it's listening, sometimes it's not.

I needed quilted fabric. The magic word being quilted! Where do I find a quilt?

{bright light!}

Well smart girl, I would find a quilt in the bedding department! So off I went shopping again, to find the quilt of my dreams!!! (you know, the one I saw in my idea? the one I could actually touch?)

I think I floated across the floor to the check out as my troubles were finally lifted.

DSC_0014 (3)

Okay. Right about now, I'm sure you are thinking...

"Jodie! How can you justify spending $80 on a swap?"

Weelllll, I needed to make 24 of these...

DSC_0015 (2)

to put one of these fragile goodies in below...

(which you only get a peek! I'll post more after the retreat)

DSC_0018 (2)

Therefore, since they are somewhat breakable, I needed something quilted and soft to put them in!!!! Ta-da!

$80 divided by 24 is $3.33 BUT I didn't even use a 1oth of the king sized quilt! Sooooo, I still have PLENTY of beautiful quilted material to use for future creations!!!! This was much prettier than the fabrics I saw at the fabric stores, and already quilted.

Oh get over it!...The quilt was actually $74.15 tax included. Am I still trying to justify things here?   ;)

*****

So believe me or not, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :)

I'm happy. The creative side of my brain is happy. Now I just hope my Savannah girls will be happy!

*****

Hidden Moral of the Story:

If I ever go visit you, I must warn you...

Save all of your beautiful quilts out of my sight. I tend to carry my pinking shears in my purse at all times!

Oh...and I can read minds too...

This is only a warning!

;)

DSC_0017 (2)

Excuse me for a while, now I have a chenille bedspread to cut up. Yep...the one from my last post!

snip snip snip snip snip snip snip snip snip {sigh}

I am attending Jenni Bowlin's Vintagefest the same weekend and it is just a few minutes from my house. I was going to invite you....but I see that you are otherwise entertained! Have a great time and I look forward to seeing your photos.

Cutting up a quilt? You are giving me a heart attack over here! Just kidding... You are a clever girl, Jodie! I have to admit that it was a little bit hard for me to see that you had cut up the quilt but the result totally convinced me that this had been a great idea. I love the colors and patterns of the quilt and you made such gorgeous and romantic little bags from it. What a shame I'm not in the swap!
Have a great day!
xoxo,
Julia
PS: Just 3 more days till F1 :-)

You cut up MY quilt?!!! :O

Yes, that's the quilt that we have on our bed and I adore it.

Great idea. The price really isn't bad when you think of each piece and all you have left over! I know what you mean about having just the right thing in your head and not being able to find it. Those girls are some lucky swappers!

WOW, I also couldn't beleive it when you said you cut up that beautiful quilt!! But it really does make a lot of sense. And once again I always say if it feels good Do It... and it look like it made you feel great! I just wish I had the guts to do something brave like that. Your my Hero!

Doni said...

What a great idea! And I am one of those kids who cut all the hair off my dolls too!!! I'd cut up a perfectly good quilt...at least I think I have the nerve to do that...as you say, the first cut was the worst! The envies are so cute and the sneak peek of the girls on the music looks wonderful, I just can't wait to see what you came up with. Sure wish I was in that swap! Please take lots of pics so we can see what you're doing and how to do it!! Great job at teasing us!!!!

Just BEAUTIFUL Jodie!! I can hardly wait to see the little gems that will be tucked inside. I have two quilts that I recenttly aquired - remember that I work in a retiement community - that I will eventually cut up. One is from a lady here that was made by her mother....and she is in her late 80s. The other was a find in the trash in one of the apartments when a resident moved out. I really must STOP bringing things home as soon there will be no room for me!! I am an addict to vintage stuff....

Thanks for visiting my 'collector' series Jodie, I do appreciate that! I try to keep up with every one too, even if that means I have to give up the hoovering ;-)!

Kateyed said...

That is a terrific idea. I hope that when it gets to be time for Silver Bella, I can think "big" like that. Heck, maybe I can for the next two swaps I am doing. I just seem to nickel and dime my money away.

The best part...your little packets are stunning. That is really beautiful material. And the collage (?) you are putting inside it looks so mystical! I am dying to see the whole thing so please share with us when this is over!!!

Jodie,
You don't have to justify it to me..I've done the same thing and will gladly do it again if it is the right story. Although, I don't know if you have a Home Goods (TJ MAXX), but they have great quilts & throws for great prices to cut up! You go, girl! :)

OH....FUNNY!!!! I have bought new things...left them outside to rust & get weathered...I sooooo understand you!!!

BEAUTIFULL quilt and I love your adventurous spirit!!

Love the quilted pouch you made and kudos for thinking outside the box. And I applaud ANYONE that can cut up something like that. I get so nervous...afraid I'll mess soemthing up.....but I took the first step today and ripped (yes ripped) some nice, vintage cotton lace off an old damaged sweater. I even saved the good part of the sweater for doll clothes and some lavendar sachets I'm going to be making.

YOU GO GIRL!

Hey Sweet Jodie, that's why the raggedy quilts are called cutter quilts, so you can grab your scissors and cut to your heart's content! You'd have a hay day at my house, because I have quilts everywhere! The Pope likes to make nests out of them to snooze on! Love that you have leftover remnants; yeah for that! I'll stand in line for one of your fabulous quilt pouches; tell me your crafting poison and we'll trade!

I bought a Toille quilt and pillow shams in pink and cream , just had to have it , much too big for my bed I was tripping over it so, I rounded the corners off, still too big, what if a spider climbed up ? now I know what to do , tomorrow, cut it to size and make little purses, stand them upright in a box, 1 for pearls ,1 for earings etc,.

If you would rather I didn,t use your idea please leave a note on my blog-----cottonreel
